This is a 1980 Matsumoku built Tele in a timeless natural ash finish. Like several other 1980 Backaroos that have surfaced in recent years, this one has hotter than normal pick-ups. Original fitments, the neck reads 8.65k and the bridge reads a mighty 13.82k which puts these pick-ups in the same league as Maxon FS-1 units fitted to contemporary high-end Matsumoku and Fujigen Strats of this era. Materials look identical. This is more non-catalogue magic - the featured TE-450 and Greco TL-500s of the era had vintage wound TR-1 sets (aka PU-T) units. These have a lot more mid range punch and do not lose the twang.
All other aspects of this Backaroo conform to TE-450 and TL-500s of the time. A thoroughly well built high quality guitar that plays as well as guitars costing many times their price tag. We have given the guitar a new set of CTS250 premium pots, a Sozo capacitor, and a new CRL 3-way switch, and as it arrived with us without a scratchplate, we have produced 3 plates for the next owner to decide on the scheme. Standard Tele plates do not fit MIJ Teles from this era, so these are new plates that fit the Backaroo. Black (as original), Aged White (to match our ST-600D), and Cream.
A great Tele for those who need a traditional look, a modern high output, and don't fancy Fender prices.
