Maya SC36 Electric Guitar
 
Maya SC36 is one of the two Chushin built Mayas. They are the perfect start if you are looking for an inexpensive way to make sure the instrument you are beginning your journey on is a good one; have been expertly prepared and set-up, and will help you progress. The difference in quality between an early 70s Maya and a brand-new mass-produced drop-shipped cheap instrument is huge. Chushin were also mass producing back in the day, but had the benefit of correctly treated and prepared wood to construct their instruments. Chushin went on to become the main manufacturer of Charvel and Jackson guitars - iconic and very expensive in the 1980s.
 
They are both nice and light, have the comfortable necks of all the Japanese products in this era,and despite being nearly 50 years old, are still in fantastic condition. They both have a vintage 'run-in' feel and wear their parking knocks and scars with pride. The SC36 (aka 8009) guitar's sunburst polyurethane paint has succumbed to age a little more than the bass. There are significant cracks in all the usual places but this is cosmetic only - some people pay to get this look!
 
The pick-ups are far more suited to small practice amplifiers than a line of Marshall Heads. The hardware is in terrific condition - the tremolo is a good quality vintage style unit seen on entry level Arias and Grecos. All machine-heads are fine and working sell and there is no crackling or scratchiness from the electrics.
 
All in all, this is a great pair of instruments - possibly the cheapest entry into the world of vintage guitars. The guitar retailed at £105 in 1976, that is about £700 today!
