- 1974 Greco SE-500 , Pre-serial number model
< Back 1974 Greco SE-500 Pre-serial number model This is another superb example of a pre-serial number Matsumoku built Strat clone - it features the slightly more substantial neck profile than the later Fujigen and Aria products. This one arrived in decent condition but had worn its frets to the absolute limit. We decided to refret it with Jescar 55090 (similar to a vintage Gibson feel), and so favoured by guitarists in the 1970s who had worn their skinny vintage Fender frets down. These are proving very popular here with customers requiring new frets on their Fender products. Most of our DreamBuild creations have these unless a customer desires an alternative. We had a set of custom Clausen Alnico 3 pick-ups made and fitted them with a new 5-way switch and potentiometers to control them. The neck unit offers everything from Gilmour to heavy blues, the bridge is wound a little hotter and thicker, but is governed by the lower tone control which can be backed off slightly to find a more traditional bridge single. Backing the volume back to 8.5 also calms the bridge down if a super clean sound is desired. It's all there, but most importantly we think, there is enough aggression and power in that bridge pick-up to get a nod of respect from the guy with the Les Paul. The in between settings are very wide and scooped - Knopfler to funk catered for. In the middle you can be Bonnie Raitt. The bridge and tuners are original Gotoh units - a (very) narrow string spacing (10mm saddles) and 2 1/16 E to E. The tuners are also in fine health although we have upgraded the string trees. Compared to many 50-year-old working guitars, this one has led a fairly kind life - just a few parking knocks and scrapes. The finish has aged gracefully - just a few cracks in the lacquer and a nice bit of nicotine sheen in the darker areas of the sunburst. It looks and feels like a genuine vintage guitar (because it is one!), but plays and sounds like a modern upgraded reissue. - Rickenbacker 4003 S/5 WhiteGlo 1986 Rick-o-Sound, ZA 0058
< Back Rickenbacker 4003 S/5 WhiteGlo 1986 Rick-o-Sound ZA 0058 Here is a real rarity - a 5 string Rickenbacker with the traditional pick-ups and general look; and in a cream and black scheme; and with Rick-o-Sound . So many of these restrict you to a mono output, but this not only opens the door to those famous twin amped set-ups without resorting to more boxes on the floor, but also comes with the original stereo cable in the case. We know of only 2 guitars in this specification produced in 1986. We also believe that this is the guitar featured in the October 1986 ‘Making Music’ magazine and featured on the Rickenbacker stand at the 1986 BMF. It has been a one-owner guitar and a very reluctant sale. Without losing ourselves in a Rush concert, big music needs a big sound, and this is what this Rickenbacker gives. The Macca thud is there too, as is that 80's chorused muted howl depending on how much you turn the damper screws. It's all there with the added basement of the low 5th. The string spacing is demanding, but you’ll know this going in, and will adapt to all the clever things you'll end up doing on it. This is no museum piece - its seen plenty of action, and wasn't always put down gently. Unusually for a gracefully aging Rickenbacker, the switch doesn't crackle, and the scratchplate isn't broken. Please have a very good inspection of the photographs here, and request any further evidence of its condition you may wish to see. You have 4.3kg (9lbs 8oz) to wear - not as heavy as it looks. But it looks incredible - the WhiteGlo has become a very classy cream, and has become so very evenly unlike some from the 1970s. No binding on this one which gives it a very clean look and adds to its timeless charms. There is a decent road-worn case and plenty of life left in these strings. We offer this for collection from us at the Hall, or will happily ship it to you wherever you are once funds have cleared. - Rickenbacker 1997 | General restoration to original specification
< Back Rickenbacker 1997 Free Consultation Book Now General restoration to original specification Let’s pretend Pete Townshend didn’t smash so many of these into Marshalls for a moment and savour one he never got his hands upon! A 21-fret Rickie with an f-hole means only one thing – it’s a Rose Morris import – this isn’t a re-issue, it’s a best guess 1965. It’s a 1 o’clock model – only eight 2 o’clock models are known to exist. It has obviously had a decent and busy life in its early years – the owner put a fair few miles on the clock back then, but as with many beautiful old guitars like this, they get put in a case, left alone while life takes over, and then re-surfaces 40 years later looking just as good but not playing so well. This sensitive restoration involved replacing a Gibson tail-piece with a period-correct Trapeze style item, careful repair of a bent machine-head (don’t believe what you read on the forums, this can be done) to keep it as original as possible, replacement of chipped and broken knobs, an electrical service, a careful fret dress, a sensitive clean, new saddle cover and general recommissioning which thankfully requires a lot of testing, playing and having fun with. The goal with this one was to keep its fabulous patina, but make it play as smoothly and comfortably as it once did; the expression on the face of the owner as he was re-united with it spelled success. Always beautiful in looks and sounds, always a challenge, and the types of challenge we relish. Gallery ← Previous Next→

- Matsumoku DB-500
< Back Matsumoku DB-500 Price £1,695 Add to Cart Chat with Us My love of early 1970s Matsumoku Strats is well known around here - I just can't get enough of them. After 50 years many have developed their own character from the styles and treatment they have received by previous owners. As much as the Maxon single coils have their own soul and character, occasionally it seems sensible to have the modern options such as being quieter and louder when you need them to be, and having more than just 3 sounds at your disposal. This SE-500 may have a few knocks on the body and age-related cracks on the lacquer, but has obviously been cherished. Pre Serial Number 1974/5 Grecos are special - Greco guitars were always good both from Matsumoku and the pre-Fender Fujigen days, but these ones are, we think, special. Whilst Maxon pick-ups are soulful and characterful, they are of their time, and the idea for this guitar is to combine the vintage feel with up-to-date sounds and playability. These guitars were faithful to contemporary Fenders and featured 3-way switching. We have unlocked the potential of this guitar and fitted a set of Clausen Alnico 5 single coils governed by a 5-way CRL switch, and a neck/bridge blend function. These pick-ups are modelled on a David Gilmour specification - the neck and middle coils are 5.5k DCR, and the bridge pick-up is wound to a phenomenal 13.5k DCR. This hotter winding does not boost the volume and unbalance the units; instead it thickens up the tone and adds a huge helping of mid-range growl that behaves in a civilized manner when clean, but drives an amplifier to perfection. It handles gain just as you need for that Numb solo, and the neck pick-up will provide that glassy chime for the cleaner tones. It will handle most styles you ask from it and any signal path you feed. Blending the neck pick-up with the powerful bridge provides a very airy scooped tone, but never loses presence, the power of the bridge unit keeps you in the mix. You may go full Communiqué Knopfler in positions 2 and 4 with the full blend function. Extremely versatile. Further tone trimming is offered with the master tone which uses a SoZo PIO capacitor to govern the high frequencies. The bridge is now a Gotoh 510TS - a very high quality unit that features a large stainless steel block which adds a lot of sustain to the guitar, and gives the guitar an unplugged acoustic ring that will probably encourage you to play for half an hour before you even plug it into an amp. It also has incredible tuning stability. Tuners are new Gotoh SDS510 units - we love the SD91 range, but only the very best for this guitar.. A few folk find pleasure in having a guitar from their birth-year - we are still in 2024 as I write this, so what an amazing 50th birthday present for you and the guitar! The price of this guitar is determined entirely by the specification it is now built to - there is no premium due to the brand as there may be for a Fender of this vintage. Matsumoku and later in the decade, Fujigen, were truly scaring the hell out of Fender - if you can't beat them, join them gave us the MIJ Fenders. Strat copies from Japan in these years were comparable quality to CBS era Fenders - some go further and braver in their opinions... Details The Look Looking old where it appeals and new where it matters. The lacquer has 50 years worth of dinks and cracks, but relic is a dirty word here. Original is best, and with this one there is no headstock tax. Headstock Brand new Gotoh SDS510 Chrome tuners. SDS510 are the premium range from Gotoh. Neck A beautiful looking maple fretboard - the finest looking woods were reserved for this model in early1974. This one was always put down gently. Pick-ups 3 x Clausen single coils to David Gilmour specification. 5.5, 5.5 and 13.5k from neck to bridge. That bridge pick-up provides more mid-range growl but there are plenty of interesting ways to tame it. Bridge Gotoh 510NST in Chrome - this is the best non locking tremolo unit we can find - extremely sensitive and precise - and no threads to wear loose. From Marvin to Gilmour - even folk who say they never use the tremolo change their minds with this one. Controls 5 way selector, master volume, master tone and neck blender control. This blender gradually brings in its opposite pick-up to expand the range of amazing tones from this guitar. Blending a tiny bit of neck with the powerful bridge pick-up lowers the mid-range without removing you from the mix. Gallery ← Previous Next→
- Matsumoku Ibi JKL No.2
< Back Matsumoku Ibi JKL No.2 Price £2,600 GBP Add to Cart Chat with Us I'm assuming you've already read the description of the red one - that gives the background to these Ibi JKLs. My rock-star buddy had "settled" for a Telecaster, and despite the obvious delights of a decent well set-up Tele, I could see he wished it was something else. These Concords defintitely had the Tele in mind with their twin singles laid out like that. After evaluating a lot of different pick-ups, I settled on Jaime's amazing Creamery creations - opting for clarity and power, and a 2 speed gearbox on the bridge. To keep the purity of the look and the specific sound I wanted here, a tapped single coil is the correct answer to the question that a splittable humbucker can never answer properly. The original neck pick-up on these Concords were always surprisingly soulful and powerful - this P-90 style replacement takes that sound and solidifies it, fills in the gaps, and delivers something I have not heard anywhere else. Good, that's the whole point. The bridge pickup in low gear begs for a loud crunch setting on the amp and is like throwing glass bottles at a wall. Bang the tone pot to change into high gear, and it's like throwing a crate of glass bottles at a wall. All in a good way, of course. All you can do is play it to see what this delivers - there really is very little else out there to compare it to. I can do something similar or identical to your Westone / Vantage / Matsumoku guitar. Or I can find a suitable donor instrument for you. This one can be for sale - any excuse to build another one!!! Details The Look This guitar retains the orignal finish complete with 40 years of parking knocks. The same shape scratchplate is used, but now features a yellow stripe and is cut to suit the Creamery pick-ups. The output jack is now at the bottom edge. That yellow headstock completes the new look. Headstock The tuners are upgraded to Gotoh SGS510 in black - the highest quality locking tuners suiting the look and feel of the guitar, and allowing fast string changes. Neck This is the original neck with the original skinny frets - just tidied up. Pick-ups A Creamery Tele-P90 for the neck position and a Creamery Tapped Tele for the bridge. Bridge A Gotoh FX6 in black gives this guitar stability, great intonation and more sustain than the original. Controls 3 way toggle with master volume and tone pots - a push push on the tone changes gear on the bridge pick-up. This thickens up the middle position as well as the obvious changes at the bridge position. Gallery ← Previous Next→
- Taylor 150c 12-String, 2202280470
< Back Taylor 150c 12-String 2202280470 This Taylor 150c is a no-nonsense decent quality electro-acoustic that covers all bases from Wish You Were Here through to Love and Affection - the bass and treble controls covering just about all your glisten and shimmering needs. Hardly used, it was bought for one gig, and then stored. Lots of acoustic volume, and when the 100 series is as good as they are, it seems unnecessary to venture up the range and spend a fortune unnecessarily. This one comes with a Taylor padded gig-bag. - 1974 Greco TE-350 | Star Fretboard, Pre-serial number model
< Back 1974 Greco TE-350 | Star Fretboard Pre-serial number model These Gneco Teles are getting very thin on the ground now - even more so in this condition. Completely original, and having suffered only a tiny amount of parking damage in its 47 years, the Maxons retain their classic sounds. The bridge pickup does look a little weedy and slim compared to the classic Fender type, but it has a soul of its own - also a lot more power than you'd think. We considered upgrading the bridge unit, but every time we discussed it, we decided to just leave it as it is. It has a real soul of its own. One of the characteristics that make these old Grecos Teles stand out is the slightly shorter scale. At 24.25 inches, it is an easy swap to and from a Les Paul during a set. This is a Matsumoku built Greco (Gneco) , these skipped across town to Fujigen 1 year later. Keeping it in this condition and with regular use and servicing, this TE-350 is unlikely to ever lose value. The frets are not new, but have that glorious run-in feel with plenty of life left- the main thing is the neck (as they all are on these) is perfectly straight, and the frets are level. It has a few little scratches and dinks, but nothing unusual or out of place on a guitar that has seen this much life. It has that little mystery star at the end of the fretboard that no-one seems to understand the meaning of. I suspect it is a dealer stamp as we have seen a few of these little stars on Mats built instruments from 74 and 75. - 1977 Greco EB-500, I776987
< Back 1977 Greco EB-500 I776987 A very rare opportunity to obtain a short scale Greco EB-500 bass in a great condition. This is a November 1977 build and both pick-ups are fully operational and sound great. The neck is as good and straight as we have seen on an EB, even with the flatwounds it has been strung with for most of its life (not the same set!) These are Maxon built PU-114 and PU-115 pick-ups, and both are humbuckers and are in fine health - the mudbucker making the Hall shake. The bridge unit has a fair bit of punch too - together they sound fantastic. Whilst looking pristine from the front, it does have a beauty spot on the top edge where a big chunk of finish has met with an object that removed it. The owner at the time covered the scar with varnish and there is no risk of it getting worse, nor is there any risk of scratching yourself on any edge. A lovely old bass, in great original condition - fully serviced and ready for service. When it arrived, the pots were a little scratchy, and have cleaned up very well with some Deoxit. If between the time of writing, and a sale, the pots give me cause for concern again, I will, with the next owner's consent, replace them with identical new ones which won't affect the price, but will cast doubt on my "all original" statement. I am not, never have been, and will never be a competent bass player - the demo video is limited to proving it works and what it sounds like. - 1977 Greco SE-500, H771864
< Back 1977 Greco SE-500 H771864 Always a firm favourite here, a white Greco SE-500, this one with the added bonus of a Rosewood board so a proper 1960s look! The necks on the Fujigen guitars are a much slimmer C than the earlier Matsumoku models from across town. The pick-ups are original to the guitar and by mid 1977 had evolved to PU-100s, retaining the snappy and airy brightness of the older units, but with 8.3k DCR instead of the 5.8 - 6.0 we see on the pre-PU100 evolution. A real outstanding feature of this guitar is the 3.53kg weight - compared to many of the guitars from this era, it is particularly light in weight which makes it a real pleasure to play. This is the type of guitar that will hook you in before you even plug it in - it has an acoustic ring we only experience with either expensively upgraded models, or very high end Fenders. This guitar has been well used, but maintained very well - the only real giveaway of its age is the tarnished neck plate - maybe the slightly faded White finish, but that would likely be a premium feature on a new guitar! This is a prime example of a mid range guitar competing admirably with premium models - it has an amazing soul - I bet you're Hendrix in less than an hour on this one! Hendrix had one of these at the beginning - before the Fenders were affordable, he rocked a Goya Strat - this is the exact same guitar branded for the domestic Japanese market; Goya were Grecos for the USA. Whilst it is absolutely fine and good to go as it is, we would be happy to upgrade the electrics to our Alnico V late 60s spec as seen in lots of the Dreambuilds based around 77 and 78 SE-500s. It makes a great guitar perfect. Talk to us if that appeals.
