- Larrivee Custom Shop 00-50, 121203
< Back Larrivee Custom Shop 00-50 121203 Larrivée 00-50 sized guitars are held in very high regard and were not made in large numbers. This is even more exclusive being a Custom Shop, produced on May 8 2013 (4 days before Chris Hadfield played a slightly smaller version of this guitar on the Space Station). This mahogany guitar has spent the majority of its life in a case in a collection, and only recently been allowed out to play. A new set of strings and a little tlc later, it has burst into life. It has a tone of its own - slightly more chime than our walnut Froggy, and a great piano like sweep across the strings. It really suits the finger more than the plectrum, but that will be the mahogany talking. With this Larrivée taking the clever lead bits and our '67 J45 taking care of the rhythm, an audience soon forms... This is rare, good and a decent investment. Unlikely to find another in mahogany, let alone in this size, I suggest a quick enquiry to bag this one. We can show you this guitar in real-time via the videocall facility if you wish. I have attempted to capture the tone and character of this lovely Concert sized acoustic in the video, so give it a listen and feel free to ask more questions. It's a cracker. - 1975 Greco SE-500W, Pre-serial number model
< Back 1975 Greco SE-500W Pre-serial number model This is very late Gneco - the clarity of the spelling increased in 1975. Most 1975 SE-500 guitars have Super Sounds logos, so this is a real cross-over model. This lovely example arrived with the Greco TE-350 , and in similarly excellent condition - both being purchased at the same time by the previous (and original) owner. It seemed essential to keep them together, and we hope to offer them as a pair to their next owner. This mid-range model of Greco was a popular work-horse instrument and may arrive here with an amazing road worn patina, but still perfectly functional. This SE-500 has led a fairly charmed life - these are the original frets and we would give them the same treatment as the TE-350 before it left us. There is a little more meat on them than the Tele, and it has that great run-in feel. This is the model that featured that very thoughtfully designed truss rod cover in the scratchplate - a thorough improvement over the previous open area that invited dust and grime into the pick-up cavities. The original Maxon pick-ups are in rude health - providing that slightly scooped yet biting tone - they sound amazing with a little crunch. As with all vintage guitars in original states, the potting may have deteriorated. We know that repotting these pick-ups will bring back some warmth - that is an option for the next owner; but until that decision is made, they stay as they are. This is a pancake construction as normal for this era of Matsumoku production - the white paint has faded to cream (matching the TE-350) but retains a lustre usually missing from guitars of this age. It has been cherished. By this time, Matsumoku was fitting a more accurate version of the vintage style tremolo , and producing them at 25.5" scale unlike many of the earlier versions which are slightly shorter in scale and have the earlier bridge design. Whilst this guitar is in fantastic original condition, we feel this guitar could be an ideal donor for a DreamBuild upgrade project - the pick-up cavities can accommodate modern pick-up footprints and a modern Gotoh 101 or 510 will fit without significant surgery. Upgrade philosophy here includes the retention of all the original electronics on the original plate, and we fabricate an identical one with a slot big enough for a 5-way selector. Nothing we would do to this one is not reversible should they ever be worth silly money. We value this guitar (and it will be stage-ready luthier prepared) at £785. A deal can be done if it can stay together with the TE-350 either in their original condition, or as DreamBuilds. - 1983 Bill Lawrence Challenger 1 BCOR-55, B30548
< Back 1983 Bill Lawrence Challenger 1 BCOR-55 B30548 This is a really great example of a Bill Lawrence BCOR-55 which features a solitary S3 Black Label pick-up. Bill Lawrence's heart was in pick-ups and he had Moridaira host them in their fine quality instruments. We are putting this one at early 1983, and all original including the Lawrence stamped saddles. The maple fretboard is unusual - most are rosewood. The location of the volume control is also unusual - most catalogue photos show it close to the pick-up, but there are no signs that this is not how it left Moridaira. The neck is super skinny and has a slight V to the profile. Very unusual but perfectly comfortable. At 3.29kg (7lbs 4oz) it is as light as it is simple. Under that empty scratchplate are routings for HSS should the mood take you later, but who could argue the charm of such simplicity? - 1980 Aria Stagecaster ST-500L, L800383
< Back 1980 Aria Stagecaster ST-500L L800383 We have one remaining lefty in stock here. This is a very rare model - left handers are few and far between. With its original tobacco-burst finish, and its VIN-54 pick-ups , this is already a fine guitar. We are stocking this as a donor for a DreamBuild upgrade , but would be happy to let it go as it is for the person who falls for its charms. As it is left-handed, the headstock decals are limited in what they tell us, but had this been right handed, it would have said Strikin’ Sound - the mid-range version that for a 20% price hike, could be offered in left handed orientation. We recently completed a DreamBuild based on an identical model - they are perfect donors for refinishing, and for hardware and electrical re-specification - keeping their vintage feel yet performing so much better than the established branded alternatives. We have given this ST-500L a slight makeover with a new black scratchplate, FS-1 DiMarzios from an ST-600D , and a good set-up, but the potential is here to go further and modernize its delivery. We can part with D800383 in its current specification for £725, but this is the ideal opportunity for a left handed player to get a maple neck Strat style guitar to sound and play precisely how they wish. The original finish on this guitar is remarkably nice, but a refinish is also feasible. Price £725 Availability Sold Recommendation Perfect quality donor for a left handed Dreambuild. - Fender 1972 Custom Deluxe Telecaster NOS, R85216
< Back Fender 1972 Custom Deluxe Telecaster NOS R85216 This 2016 Greg Fessler crafted beauty is a mind-blowing example of how guitars create a first impression. Conversations stop when it is noticed - even non-players gravitate towards it and appreciate it. Capri Orange cannot fail to impress. It is a NOS model so appearing brand new - no false aging or slightly insincere grain. Two similar ones to this recently came onto the market in California - both sonic blue. Unsurprisingly neither stayed on the market for long. So, a Capri Orange Tele Deluxe with a Bigsby, built by Fessler probably is all you need to know in order to want it in your life, but let's do the details anyway. This has a solid Mahogany body, so not the lightest guitar in the world, but familiar to fans of Teles with serial numbers between 250000 and 500000. The 9.50" radius quartersawn maple neck is a "60's style Oval C" style at 0.820" to 0.930", the board is AAA EI Rosewood into which sit Sanko 6105 frets (medium jumbo). The larger Strat and colour coded headstock is another great feature of this Deluxe. This is proper twenty-six inch Elephant Bells and Poet Collars stuff. Cuban heels provided by Bigsby with a B-5 vibrato . That enormous tortoiseshell scratchplate is the disco ruffle shirt. Capri Orange? This ought to be collected in a Capri 3000GXL. But beyond the exaggerated tributes to the exaggerated early 1970's, there is a serious guitar here. Fessler looked beyond the Fender pick-up drawers for some (not all) of these Deluxes. This one features a pair of Lollar Charlie Christian pick-ups . With dedicated controls, there is a very wide range of useful and soulful sounds from this Deluxe. Roll the tones down for some big bodied jazzer tone, and set the bridge pick-up free on a slightly driven valve amp for proper 70's rock sounds . Through the simulators and Airbus A380 DAW packages, you get a responsive and expressive set of Tele tones to do what you wish with, and they stay silent when they are asked. A guitar that does most things you need brilliantly, and looks good enough to eat. And, no-one else will have one. - 1974 Greco SE-550N, Pre-serial Number
< Back 1974 Greco SE-550N Pre-serial Number This is one of the rarest Greco models out there - along with the 480, this is one you will least likely find. Only featuring in the 1974 Kanda Shokai catalogue for half a year, after the 'Electric Sounds" range evolved into the "Electric Guitar" range. The 550 became the 600, and was essentially a model that used the nicest looking wood in their stock. This 550 features the more faithful copy of the vintage bridge, and it retains its cover too. The pick-ups are standard Maxon units governed by traditional 3 way switch and volume / tone functions and all work magnificently. Maxons are known for their low output airy bright snappiness that encourage Hendrix renditions, and stamp on the OD-1 and SRV repertoires take over. A 42mm nut and 9.5" radius maple board are attached to a chunky full C neck - a far cry from the better known 80's JV Fujigen Strats - far more in keeping with late 70's Fenders. The overwhelming feature of this 550 aside from its rarity is the condition. It comes with its original case, and tool roll which still includes the stubby allen key for the truss rod. These necks stay straight - we have never had to adjust a 5-piece neck - beautifully engineered and crafted. Quite weighty at 3.89kg (8lbs 9oz), this may also remind you of a late 70s Fender. Like all Harayama necks, this one allows a super slick action, and is equally at home with a higher action. Price £1,295 Availability 1 at Ketteringham Hall Recommendation Just enjoy it as it is. - Rickenbacker 4001 CS - Signed by Chris Squire, 306/1000 Limited Edition
< Back Rickenbacker 4001 CS - Signed by Chris Squire 306/1000 Limited Edition This desirable and collectible bass is signed by the late great man himself and is photographed around his neck for provenance. This is #306 of the limited run of 1,000; only a tiny fraction of these were held and signed by Chris Squire in person. The Certificate of Authenticity accompanies the guitar. It is a large headstock version produced in December 1991. The bass is in fine condition, and has been put to use - it is no case queen; yet still in great condition. Under the red and cream is a maple body, maple neck and the normal Rickenbacker rosewood board. It is a fine tribute to Chris Squire's 1974 4001. - Gretsch Penguin - Stephen Stern Masterbuild, UC22032277
< Back Gretsch Penguin - Stephen Stern Masterbuild UC22032277 Custom Shop Gretsches are usually very special, and this one was commissioned to be very special indeed. This is a Stephen Stern hollow body Penguin, in an extremely dark metallic green - almost black until it catches the light. Sparkly silver binding and cream sides and rear really makes this one stand out even amongst other Sterns and Madrigals. There are 3 Dynasonic pick-ups - these are 10.33k, 10.57k and 10.45k from neck to bridge, and all 3 sound phenomenal at any level of gain, and their character transforms from a warm clarity with low levels of gain right up to aggressive brightness as the drive increases; but they always feel in control - a more refined version of the original DeArmond 2000 on which they are based. Thanks to the crystal clear clarity on offer, mixing the pick-ups offers enormous versatility with tones you may not expect from a Gretsch. The control layout assumes a normal twin pick-up Gretsch in that the pick-up selector offer neck, neck and bridge, and bridge in its 3 settings, and each pick-up has its own volume control. The neighbouring toggle switch will activate the middle pick-up in any of the settings and its own volume control is the bottom knob. The middle can be heard on its own by turning the other pick-ups' volume down. On its own it is a very pleasant tone and pleasingly different. A third toggle switch feeds the signal through a pair of Squeezeboxes to give you the usual Gretsch tone pre-sets. A Master Volume with a treble bleed completes the control layout. The Bigsby provides the normal wobble of the pitch, but stays firmly in place at all times - no chance of tuning instability with this one. Almost unplayed since new, this joined a large collection and shows no signs of use. It comes in its original case complete with all the paperwork including CoA. This beautiful guitar has one tiny cosmetic flaw in that the paint has minor cracks in 2 places - one at the heel and the other at the bottom below the strap pin. The binding and paint have expanded at slightly different rates and this occurred a few weeks after delivery and has not changed since. Some have suggested this occurred in the aeroplane, but we can't commit to that. We have captured this in the photos and please contact us to let us show you over a videocall if this may be an issue. That tiny flaw aside, this is an outstanding guitar with an interesting and useful specification - Stephen Stern models are perhaps the most sought after modern Gretsches and chances to own one are few and far between. It is here at the Hall and can be viewed and played by appointment - thanks to recent UK politics, the exchange rate may well suit overseas buyers - we will ship worldwide, pack to extremely high standards and guitars are despatched with full value insurance. - Greco SE-450S, CC805067
< Back Greco SE-450S CC805067 The first couple of years of the 1980s must have been exciting at Fujigen - Fender were in town and had decided that if you can't beat them, you have to join them - Fender Japan was in sight. The late 1970's had produced incredible quality guitars at very worrying prices for the Americans - all the modern developments of the CBS era were being delivered - 5-way switches, bullet rods, 3 point micro-tilt neck fitment - all present in the Greco range alongside the traditional pre-CBS styles. 2 models in the range featured these CBS style developments - the SE-450 and the SE-700 - the latter being one of the best kept secrets and a firm favourite amongst our customers and visitors. The SE-450 was the entry level post-CBS era tribute with the PU-S5 pick-ups (an iteration of the ever-popular PU-100), the 5-way switch providing the parallel in-between tones, and the 3 bolt neck. Some 450s were sen ash, some were alder - this one being the latter and a flyweight at 3.18kg (7lbs exactly). Where the Early Sixties 700 had a thick slab of Rosewood and a late 60's neck profile, the Spacey Sounds 450 had maple, and fans of the MIJ JVs and Squiers will immediately recognize the slim C neck. A few years later, this guitar would have be sold as a CST-50 Squier by Fender. Have you seen the prices of those today? With this one, you don't pay the headstock tax. As the 1980s rolled on, the warmth and character of the alnico pick-ups were falling out of favour against the ice-picky more punchy ceramics - the all of nothing types that were feeding long floor pedal chains and solid state amps. These older alnico magnets were developed for simpler days when it was you plugged into an amp. Of course, this feeds an OD-1, or a Maxon 808 perfectly well, but delivers marvellously with just a cable and a small valve amp. Now we going full circle, plugging into a Focusrite and doing all the clever stuff on a computer screen, these old pick-ups start to make sense again. I can't think of a better guitar to begin a journey on, or to develop intermediate skills. Starter guitars bought with a mouse click and delivered in 24 hours serve a purpose, but will quickly let you down. This is the sweet-spot, and will serve you for many more steps along the journey. The seasoned professional here happily admits he would gig with this in a heartbeat. A previous owner has had a tiny section of the rear of the headstock removed - either for an unusual approach to an F chord, or perhaps a Japanese icon of the time had done this and therefore it became necessary - we're not sure. Make sure you see that in the photos, but know that it is invisible from the front, and doesn't affect the guitar's performance. Black on black on Sunburst makes up for this! - 1967 Gibson J-45, 056844
< Back 1967 Gibson J-45 056844 This guitar should never retire - it is as phenomenal as you would hope a 1960s Gibson would be. Easy to see why these were so popular with those that matter, and that nickname of the Workhorse stuck. These aren't the loudest acoustics out there, but the fullness, the roundness and clarity of the tone is all it needs. Still with round shoulders at this age, and wearing its cherryburst vibrantly, I hope you can forgive a couple of very minor blemishes on the finish, the capo marks on the back of the neck. If you know your J-45s, then you'll understand when I say it is low, fast and eager. If you are just in the mood for a proper vintage acoustic, look no further - it doesn't get much better than this.
