  • Gretsch Penguin - Stephen Stern Masterbuild, UC22032277

< Back Gretsch Penguin - Stephen Stern Masterbuild UC22032277 Custom Shop Gretsches are usually very special, and this one was commissioned to be very special indeed. This is a Stephen Stern hollow body Penguin, in an extremely dark metallic green - almost black until it catches the light. Sparkly silver binding and cream sides and rear really makes this one stand out even amongst other Sterns and Madrigals. There are 3 Dynasonic pick-ups - these are 10.33k, 10.57k and 10.45k from neck to bridge, and all 3 sound phenomenal at any level of gain, and their character transforms from a warm clarity with low levels of gain right up to aggressive brightness as the drive increases; but they always feel in control - a more refined version of the original DeArmond 2000 on which they are based. Thanks to the crystal clear clarity on offer, mixing the pick-ups offers enormous versatility with tones you may not expect from a Gretsch. The control layout assumes a normal twin pick-up Gretsch in that the pick-up selector offer neck, neck and bridge, and bridge in its 3 settings, and each pick-up has its own volume control. The neighbouring toggle switch will activate the middle pick-up in any of the settings and its own volume control is the bottom knob. The middle can be heard on its own by turning the other pick-ups' volume down. On its own it is a very pleasant tone and pleasingly different. A third toggle switch feeds the signal through a pair of Squeezeboxes to give you the usual Gretsch tone pre-sets. A Master Volume with a treble bleed completes the control layout. The Bigsby provides the normal wobble of the pitch, but stays firmly in place at all times - no chance of tuning instability with this one. Almost unplayed since new, this joined a large collection and shows no signs of use. It comes in its original case complete with all the paperwork including CoA. This beautiful guitar has one tiny cosmetic flaw in that the paint has minor cracks in 2 places - one at the heel and the other at the bottom below the strap pin. The binding and paint have expanded at slightly different rates and this occurred a few weeks after delivery and has not changed since. Some have suggested this occurred in the aeroplane, but we can't commit to that. We have captured this in the photos and please contact us to let us show you over a videocall if this may be an issue. That tiny flaw aside, this is an outstanding guitar with an interesting and useful specification - Stephen Stern models are perhaps the most sought after modern Gretsches and chances to own one are few and far between. It is here at the Hall and can be viewed and played by appointment - thanks to recent UK politics, the exchange rate may well suit overseas buyers - we will ship worldwide, pack to extremely high standards and guitars are despatched with full value insurance. • Greco SE-450S, CC805067

< Back Greco SE-450S CC805067 The first couple of years of the 1980s must have been exciting at Fujigen - Fender were in town and had decided that if you can't beat them, you have to join them - Fender Japan was in sight. The late 1970's had produced incredible quality guitars at very worrying prices for the Americans - all the modern developments of the CBS era were being delivered - 5-way switches, bullet rods, 3 point micro-tilt neck fitment - all present in the Greco range alongside the traditional pre-CBS styles. 2 models in the range featured these CBS style developments - the SE-450 and the SE-700 - the latter being one of the best kept secrets and a firm favourite amongst our customers and visitors. The SE-450 was the entry level post-CBS era tribute with the PU-S5 pick-ups (an iteration of the ever-popular PU-100), the 5-way switch providing the parallel in-between tones, and the 3 bolt neck. Some 450s were sen ash, some were alder - this one being the latter and a flyweight at 3.18kg (7lbs exactly). Where the Early Sixties 700 had a thick slab of Rosewood and a late 60's neck profile, the Spacey Sounds 450 had maple, and fans of the MIJ JVs and Squiers will immediately recognize the slim C neck. A few years later, this guitar would have be sold as a CST-50 Squier by Fender. Have you seen the prices of those today? With this one, you don't pay the headstock tax. As the 1980s rolled on, the warmth and character of the alnico pick-ups were falling out of favour against the ice-picky more punchy ceramics - the all of nothing types that were feeding long floor pedal chains and solid state amps. These older alnico magnets were developed for simpler days when it was you plugged into an amp. Of course, this feeds an OD-1, or a Maxon 808 perfectly well, but delivers marvellously with just a cable and a small valve amp. Now we going full circle, plugging into a Focusrite and doing all the clever stuff on a computer screen, these old pick-ups start to make sense again. I can't think of a better guitar to begin a journey on, or to develop intermediate skills. Starter guitars bought with a mouse click and delivered in 24 hours serve a purpose, but will quickly let you down. This is the sweet-spot, and will serve you for many more steps along the journey. The seasoned professional here happily admits he would gig with this in a heartbeat. A previous owner has had a tiny section of the rear of the headstock removed - either for an unusual approach to an F chord, or perhaps a Japanese icon of the time had done this and therefore it became necessary - we're not sure. Make sure you see that in the photos, but know that it is invisible from the front, and doesn't affect the guitar's performance. Black on black on Sunburst makes up for this! • 1967 Gibson J-45, 056844

< Back 1967 Gibson J-45 056844 This guitar should never retire - it is as phenomenal as you would hope a 1960s Gibson would be. Easy to see why these were so popular with those that matter, and that nickname of the Workhorse stuck. These aren't the loudest acoustics out there, but the fullness, the roundness and clarity of the tone is all it needs. Still with round shoulders at this age, and wearing its cherryburst vibrantly, I hope you can forgive a couple of very minor blemishes on the finish, the capo marks on the back of the neck. If you know your J-45s, then you'll understand when I say it is low, fast and eager. If you are just in the mood for a proper vintage acoustic, look no further - it doesn't get much better than this. < Back Yamaha NTX-700 No Number The NTX-700 is a thin body electro-classical that features the ART pick-up system - 2 pick-ups under the saddle that focus on E-D, and G-E allowing you to tailor the signal from each to really micro-manage the tones. The tuners feel very good and It has just been serviced and now wears new Thomastik-Infeld Classic S Rope-core strings, and is ready for everything from living room to the stage. • Greco SE-600J (Upgraded), L790805

< Back Greco SE-600J (Upgraded) L790805 These Jeff Beck models were built by all the main factories around the time of his Japanese tour - there are a couple of photos of a similar (presumably a Fender) guitar on the Nagoya publicity shots - there are certainly a few reverse-phase sounds present if you listen to the recordings. Matsumoku, Fujigen, Chushin, Tokai, they all produced a replica of this guitar and offered different degrees of complexity between the 500, 600 and 800 models. The 500 and most 600 models were offered with simple on/off/on switches to control the pick-ups and select the phasing; some 600 and all 800 models had a very complex arrangement where series/parallel functionality replaced a couple of the normal pick-up selections - so complex that even the brochure writers gave up trying to explain it. The series options are worthwhile with these magnificent Excel pick-ups - they work together without the muddiness, but it seems annoying to have to forego some of the parallel combinations. So, here is an alternative that gives you a traditional Strat, a decent go at a Tele, and some immense series tones that come into their own with the phase reversal facility. It's genuinely impossible to give a comparison with other guitars as this configuration is only really available via Brian May, but we can't have 6 switches on a Strat - I don't want to mess with the looks. The 3 mini switches control the pick-ups for on/off and which phase you wish, and a stealthy S-1 switch in the volume control will bring you all the series options. A master tone completes the arrangement. In the aim of keeping things simple and not having more switches to contend with, the series options require all 3 pick-ups to be engaged - then you decide what phase relationship they have with each other, and this unlocks a surprisingly versatile palette - this is beyond "offering a Gibson sound", and into powerful alternative tones that you'd usually require a square metre of foot pedals for. The demo video attempts to let you hear these tones: Once familiar with the controls, this becomes quite a beast, and you can either recreate the Stanley Clarke stuff, or go your own way and find some really interesting tones to get you noticed. Those familiar with JV Fenders will recognize the neck profile - not super skinny, but decidely slim and slick. This has been a busy guitar (a good sign) and you'll have to forgive the sticker rash behind the bridge. We have put brand new Gotoh SD-91 tuners on this one along with a brand new Gotoh GE-101 vintage style bridge. The pick-ups are original, as are the switches, but the pots and knobs are brand new Fender/CTS units. The appeal of this guitar ought to extend beyond Jeff Beck fans - it is a good useful tool in its own right - we decided to wait a while after his sad passing before offering this one. This could easily serve as your only guitar, but will happily sit alongside more traditional instruments ready to be called upon when you need those special tones. It's a cracker. • Cool Z ZLC-1 2015, A150516

< Back Cool Z ZLC-1 2015 A150516 A CoolZ is a very rare sight outside Japan but it has a very good heritage. Ensenada caused Fujigen to rethink the business plan as a Made in Mexico gave Fender a logistical and economic advantage over Japanese production. Fujigen were really in their stride and were producing some very high quality guitars for Fender and in the mid 1980s most of Fenders sold were produced in Japan. Mexico opened in 87 and despite some teething issues and catastrophes, Mexico had replaced Japan in the plan. Fender Japan evolved back into Greco - produced for the domestic market only. Following this, Fujigen established several new brands. CoolZ is one such brand and was released to great critical acclaim. The long tenon construction won it many fans - even amongst Gibson fans. This delicious Snow White ZLC-1 is one of the last made before the model evolved into the ZLC-10. This guitar is factory fresh - not a mark on it. The guitar can be purchased in its current specification from this advert, or alternatively we can upgrade the pick-ups to Clausen A5 custom wound PAFs (Gold covers) which provide an enhanced set of tones. We can offer an even higher spec with a full Jimmy Page wiring solution with coil splitting, series and reverse phase options to unlock the full potential of this guitar. If either of these options appeal, please contact us via the website and we can discuss the options. • Hohner B2A | Pick-up Upgrade

< Back Hohner B2A Free Consultation Book Now Pick-up Upgrade A very good friend and Matsumoku client has been spoilt by having Qtuner pick-ups in a spectacular 6 string bass - after Qtuner sounds, most other basses sound flat and soulless. Lugging that 6 stringer around everywhere isn't always appropriate and he presented us with a mid-80s Hohner headless that serves as the workaday instrument. B2A basses have that active boost which is great, but passively, the Select by EMG pick-ups are not great. They make a sound, but not a particularly pleasant and useful one if you don't need the presence and power of the active circuit. Qtuner have long gone unfortunately, so we drew up a shortlist of characterful appropriate sized pick-ups and discussed the implications with the owner. In the running was Lace Alumitone, the obvious EMG, and a left-field choice I had stumbled upon while down a few rabbit holes. Near the harbour in Coney Island, NYC, is a chap called David, and he will happily produce a set of neodymium guitar humbucker sized bass pick-ups when asked. No more discussion required! These are not the first units he has produced - many Steinberger owners have swapped out the EMGs for his products. He doesn't shout about it - maybe he ought to! We joined a small queue and waited with baited breath. At this point I would like extend my immense gratitude to and respect for David who delivered this order despite enduring the worst possible calamity imaginable at the start of the build. Thanks David. The results are outstanding - in passive mode there is power, clarity, dynamics - the lot. Boosting this with the active circuit is almost unnecessary, but adds a new dimension. Can all this sound be coming from this tiny box? No wonder EMGs got swapped out for these. This is phase one for this Hohner - we have even more plans for it: watch this space... • Westone Paduak I, 2074419

< Back Westone Paduak I 2074419 A good Westone Paduak I is usually a keeper - not many appear on the market because owners can't bear to part with them even after they have been replaced as working guitars by something more modern and versatile. This example stayed in Japan until last year, hung around on various auction sites until I saw it, and hammered the BID button. Perhaps the niche market that appreciates the Paduak was put off by the non-original pick-up - an F-450 being a pre-requisite for the appeal. The original pick-ups in Paduaks are great - no doubt, but the appeal to me has always been the neck and general feel of the guitar. Like a good old Esquire, your playing style will determine the versatility and picking gently over the upper frets can be as good as a selector nudge - sometimes better. The addition of a Lace Sensor Alumitone humbucker with the split and boost function is a brave move, but as it turns out, an inspired one. It does require a rethink for amp settings and any effects that may determine your sounds, the sound engineer will be furious with an unannounced flick of the boost switch; but what this guitar can do is simplify your set-up. Not this one - this one stays with us forever, but we are making more. This instrument has become the inspiration for a series of re-issued Paduaks we can't wait to let them loose on you.
